A study of Alex Toth and his composition
Posted by admin on 19th February , 2011Alex Toth is one of my favorite comic artists. He used almost exclusively black and white know that they eye is drawn to two things- the Human Face/Shape and light. One of these are two people walking in the woods, all done in silhouettes, but Toth knows to make everything but the human shapes abstract- you are instantly drawn to the iconic shape of the human body, so the page is read clearly, instantly and totally through the control of the artist.
Here, I’ve highlighted how he composed a page using pure black and white. Because the eye is attracted to light, he uses the positive white areas to draw your eye from moment to moment.
Anyway, those are just some observations from Toth fan who is totally in awe of his work, his layout, composition and his ability to guide the reader through
the experience.
Viva La Toth!
